Chapter 27

“Take a left here,” Corbin instructed from the back seat, lifting his head up from Claire’s neck, where he’d spent the last five minutes leaving tender, purple hickeys. I could only imagine the look of disgust she’d have on her face in the morning when she looked into her mirror.

If. If she got to look in her mirror. Her luck was stacked against her. She was in the car with two demons, one of them thirsting for her soul and the other, me, having a hard time fighting my basic instinct. She was sugar sweet, and it took everything I had in me not to pull the car over and corrupt her until her soul was blazing with hellfire.

I followed Corbin’s directions, and we eventually ended up at a modest home not far from where Zach lived. I pulled into the driveway and looked at him.

“My house,” he said, climbing out of the car with Claire still in tow. Good to know. You know, in case I wanted to burn his house down while he slept. Not that it would harm him, but it would sure ruin his day and give me a hearty chuckle.

I followed him inside and plopped down on the couch like he’d done at my house. His place was clean, almost too clean. Sterile would be a good description of it with its poured, glossy cement floors and very modern décor. Claire sat down beside me, her ankles crossed, her hands clasped in her lap. She looked at me with her warm, chocolate-brown eyes, and my stomach clenched.

I pulled in a deep breath and ground my teeth. Devil, she was nearly as delicious as Maggie in her innocence. I wondered what a taste of her soul would be like. I argued with myself over it—she was a good girl, and she went to church; one fun night with her didn’t mean she’d go to hell—all it meant was that she’d be slightly tarnished. A girl like Claire could reclaim herself. She was devout. I could taste it in the air around her.

“It’s hard, isn’t it?” Corbin asked softly, coming to sink down onto a soft, cushiony chair near me.

“What?” I asked, tearing my eyes from Claire.

“Trying to deny what you are,” he said softly, his green eyes flashing. “Why are you doing it?”

“I’m not,” I countered. “I took Doug’s soul earlier–”

“You took a soul that was already on its way to hell. You just gave him the push he needed. I know your reputation, brother. I know what you’re capable of. I know the things you’ve done, the souls you’ve taken. I remember when you corrupted that eleven-year-old boy and made him kill–”

“Shut up,” I hissed at him, my eyes darkening. It had been a crowning achievement in my existence. I was a darker creature then.

“Again with your denial,” Corbin said thoughtfully. “You know, I must admit, that was one of the only times in my death that I was ever proud to call you my brother.
